BMX
Virginia BMX is dedicated to the promotion of bicycle motocross racing in the state of Virginia. As a member of the National Bicycle League (NBL), BMX's premier sanctioning organization, Virginia BMX organizes BMX events across the state, encouraging sportsmanship, healthy competition, skills, and fitness. BMX will be featured at the Summer Olympics in Beijing this year, and quite a few Olympians have participated in an event in Virginia at one time or another. Nobody sits on the bench in BMX, and BMX is open to boys, girls, women, and men from age 3 up. As a matter of fact, there is a large contingent of 30 year-old and over riders in Virginia, which makes for some really intense and exciting competition. You're never too old to race BMX in Virginia! BMX riders have four NBL-sanctioned tracks in Virginia on which to compete: NOVA BMX in Woodbridge, Hampton Supertrack in Hampton, Richmond BMX in Richmond, and Winchester BMX in Winchester. Each track hosts about 20 local races, double-points races, and other special events. At most local races, the entry fee is less than $10.00 for a day of BMX racing for NBL members. In addition to nearly 100 local races offered at the local tracks throughout the calendar year, there are several marquee events. In January, Virginia BMX hosts the NBL Blue Ridge Mountain Nationals at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington. Racers from Maine to Florida as well as many from the Midwest make the trip to race in the first major race of the year in a great indoor venue nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains about a 3-hour drive from Washington, DC. In April NOVA BMX hosts the NBL Freedom Nationals. Racers, most particularly top-level professionals, from all over the country (and in some cases, the world) travel to compete in this event. Hampton Supertrack will host an NBL Regional race in July 2008. The Virginia State Championship Series, which runs from April through October, features qualifying races at each track and a state final at the end. Top finishers in each class are awarded a special number reflecting their ranking in state competition for the year. The series gives Virginia BMX'ers the fun of competing against their friends at all the tracks in the state then participating in the state championship race in Richmond.
